Kind-Hearted German Shepherd Surprises Owner By Comforting The Orphaned Fawns She Rescues

When many envision German Shepherd dogs, they often conjure an image of a vigilant protector ready to defend its master at all costs. They possess unwavering loyalty, determination, and a formidable appearance when necessary.

Sarge embodies the quintessential traits of his German Shepherd lineage. However, owing to his owner’s penchant for rescuing animals, they’ve unearthed a tender and affectionate side to this remarkable canine. Today, we’re excited to unveil his heartwarming tale!

Interestingly, Sarge harbors a particular fondness for orphaned fawns requiring assistance due to injuries. Cheryl Stephen, his owner, graciously shares insights into Sarge’s life and their adventures on the farm. Stumbling upon Sarge’s endearing photographs online, we were eager to delve deeper into his story and relay it to you.

A German Shepherd with a Big Heart

Sarge and Cheryl reside in Ohio, tucked away on a quaint farm where the ethos is quite distinct: animals aren’t commodities for consumption; rather, they’re esteemed members of the family, cherished for their well-being and contentment, as every creature rightfully deserves.

Cheryl’s affinity for providing sanctuary to strays and rescuing animals traces back to her childhood, a virtuous habit seamlessly integrated into her adult life. Now a mother to two sons who share her passion for animals, Cheryl’s commitment to nurturing and safeguarding extends to her entire household.

Sarge, loyal and devoted, remains closely tethered to the family unit, assuming the role of guardian for the animals Cheryl brings into their fold. Entering Cheryl’s life a decade ago, Sarge stands as her sole purebred companion amidst a diverse array of mixed-breed pups—a testament to Cheryl’s belief in the beauty of diversity.

Many of these furry companions found their way to the farm, abandoned by owners who could no longer care for them. Yet, under Cheryl and Sarge’s watchful care, they’ve blossomed into remarkable companions, forging unbreakable bonds and forming a harmonious, albeit unconventional, family unit.

Though Sarge once exhibited mischievous tendencies in his youth, a transformative moment occurred six years ago with the arrival of their first rescued fawn. Discovered injured on the roadside by a friend, the fragile creature was swiftly ushered to the farm, where Sarge, in an unexpected display of tenderness, assumed the role of protector and nurturer—a heartwarming testament to the remarkable capacity for love and compassion.

Sarge, the Protector of Injured Animals

The Stephens’ farm boasts a diverse array of animals beyond just dogs and fawns. In addition to their canine companions and young deer, they nurture a pet rooster, a hen, a pony, and a horse. Recently, they welcomed a baby goat and a small black sheep into the fold, both acquired from a local barn.

Cheryl oversees a handful of rock doves, offspring of a racing pigeon that found its permanent residence at the farm. Among the dogs, there are Sarge, Brownie, Dingo, Doodle, and Scrunchers. Though they fondly remember Angus, who has since passed away, and Jack, who went missing some time ago.

Jack, known for his affinity for animals, once heroically rescued a chipmunk from a perilous situation. His absence is felt keenly, and the hope remains strong for his safe return to the loving embrace of his human and canine family.

The Stephen’s Farm, an Unofficial Animal Sanctuary

Cheryl’s farm isn’t officially designated as a shelter or sanctuary; rather, it’s a labor of love for Cheryl and her family, who generously offer refuge to animals in need whenever they can. Fortunately, they possess both the space and the means to extend this compassionate gesture, though they opt not to accept donations.

On Instagram, Cheryl delights in sharing glimpses of her farm life and the endearing tales of its inhabitants. Despite expectations, it’s not the German Shepherd who steals the spotlight on her page; that honor belongs to Bucky, a cow rescued at just a week old.

Bucky’s journey to Cheryl’s care began unexpectedly. Spotted tethered in the back of a passing pickup truck en route to an auction, Cheryl intervened, negotiating with the owner—a kind-hearted farmer—to secure the young bovine’s freedom. Had she not acted, Bucky would likely have met a grim fate at the livestock sale, destined for veal production.

Though Cheryl’s decision to rescue Bucky was impulsive, she has never looked back. Now a hefty 2,500-pounder, Bucky enjoys lounging on the porch and occasionally ventures indoors, much to the delight of Cheryl’s online followers.

The images and stories Cheryl shares on social media captivate audiences, prompting many to express a desire to visit the farm and meet Bucky in person. His immense size is a particular point of fascination, drawing curious admirers eager for an up-close encounter.

The Joy of Helping Animals

Bringing joy to Cheryl is the act of sharing her beloved animals with the world, knowing they are cherished by others. This sentiment resonates deeply with us, as we firmly believe in the importance of loving and respecting all creatures. If you share this conviction, we urge you to spread this story, hoping it inspires others to extend their compassion to animals wherever they may be, in whatever capacity they can.

Even the most modest gesture of kindness towards an animal holds the potential to create a significant impact. Should you find an animal in distress or solitude, unable to rescue them yourself, there are still countless ways to offer assistance.

Assisting animals in need not only benefits them but also nourishes our own spirits. The gratitude expressed by an animal that has endured suffering or neglect is incomparable. We possess the ability to enact positive change for them, no matter how small the gesture. So, why not seize the opportunity to do something good for these deserving creatures?
